In Australia we don't use bait when fishing for freshwater crayfish (yabbies), we trawl
for them. To make a basket to trawl them, you just need to shape chicken wire into an
open basket and strengthen the top with heavy duty fencing wire in a rectangular shape
(to stop it from collapsing while dragging it), attach two ropes to corners, like crossover
handles, then attach a long rope to the center of these handles and it's finished. Throw the
basket out into the pond and wait awhile then start pulling the basket slowly over the
bottom towards you. The basket picks up the yabbies out of the mud.
