Archimedes Screw

Has anyone ever used an Archimedes Screw for water pumping applications? I know farmers in ancient times used them for irrigation. I could easily envision one attached to a bicycle crank to pump water to hydroponics or aquaponics. It would certainly help save on energy demands by at least reducing demands of an electrical water pump. The link shows some information for those interested
