Here's the scenarios, Paul.

1. Don Yeoman of JPL looked out and claimed to see the mythical Hale-Bopp in an orbit which would place HALE-BOPP AT DEC 15 09 20 S ON MAY 28, '96. He said so in Orbital Elements he posted on May 28, '96, which he said were based on observations up through May 23, '96.
2. ON MAY 28, '96, JUPITER WAS AT DEC Dec 22 19 03 S, and presumably Don Yeoman observed the mythical Hale-Bopp to be perturbing during those observations, just 5 days earlier.
3. Don Yeoman of JPL then looked out and claimed to see the mythical Hale-Bopp leaped away from Jupiter between May 23 and June 25, '96, as he posted new Orbital Elements on June 27, '96 which would have placed the mythical HALE-BOPP AT DEC 12 21 35 S ON MAY 28, '96. Further away from Jupiter! Did he not observe the mythical Hale-Bopp to be at Dec 15 on or about May 23? He said he did! Then how did it zip away from Jupiter to arrive at Dec 12? He should know, he said all these orbit changes were due to observations!
4. ON JUNE 27, '96 JUPITER WAS AT DEC 22 48 45 S, partically the same place as a month before. In addition, Don Yeoman's JPL orbit had the mythical Hale-Bopp pretty much the same place on June 27 as they had it on May 28, per the new orbit - Dec 12 17 04, just 4 arc minutes further away from Jupiter.

How did Hale-Bopp make a leap across the sky, all the while under the close eye of JPL! Mind you, the RA for both Hale-Bopp and Jupiter through all of this was close to RA 19, for both months.
